Comida Corrida is best deal Fred H 11-13-07
When I was visiting the area I found that the best deal for the money was the small cafes that served a daily special, or comida corrida. It usually consists of a bowl of soup, a main dish of some meat (pork or chicken) and a sauce, rice and beans. Bread is also sometimes added and makes the meal filling. A drink is added for just a few cents more.

The prices have ranged from $22 pesos (about $1.98US) to $35 pesos (or about $3.25US).

One place we ate at was a buffet for only $35 pesos and was all you can eat. Ask the locals where the best and cleanest places are.

Yes, I agree! I would also stress that people make sure you ask someone you trust as to which restaurant is clean and consistent in the quality of their food.

Can either of you suggest places that you thought were clean and consistent in the quality of their food?

My family and I will be traveling to Xalapa over winterbreak.

any other tips?

First, let me tell you that I am not a person who needs anything fancy, so my recommendations will not be the high end - economy, good food, cleanliness and access are what I look for. That being said, there is a great little place (multiple locations) called Carusso.

It is an all-you-can-eat cafeteria-style place that is usually packed with people, young and old (which is what struck me). You can have soup, salad, tortillas, lasagna (Mexican style), potatoes, vegetables, etc. Now, this makes it sound like an American place, but it is not. It is more like a family place, and you can go up for seconds.

It is clean, there's plenty of wait staff to help you, the food is good, and the best part... it is only $39.50 MX per person (about $3.60 USD).

The one I went to is located just down from Belisario Dominguez on Revolucion, going away from Parque Juarez.

Hope this helps...
