I see from this web site's currency converter (bottom left of page) that the exchange rate as of today is 15.32 pesos to the dollar. That's a nice figure since the last time I was in Mexico when it was closer to 10.78.

Is inflation in Mexico so high that this makes the exchange less meaningful, or is this a good time to think about a move. In other words, are we going to get a lot of bang from our buck?

What does an average meal for two cost in pesos... as a gauge?

Dear Karen,

At the moment you can get a big bang for the buck. But who knows what it will be in 6 months. The Peso is still floating.

A good meal will run from 30 pesos to 100 pesos. These are good restaurants but not the top of the line as in a 5 star. With the conversion rate, you pay less.
Gasoline is currently more in Mex. than in the US and is holding at 7.72 pesos per liter. I recently paid $1.65 per gallon in the US.
Inflation will hit Mex. soon, but with the peso to dollar rate, (at the moment) you can survive on $1,000 dollars or less per month. Just make sure you don't convert your dollars to pesos when you come to Mex. Use the ATMs and you will realize the exchange rate. Hope this helps.

Jay

Omigosh! Based on what you said the food prices are $1.97US to $6.85US as of today's exchange rate. I expect that the 100 peso meal is the high end? That's incredible.

I guess gas prices event that out a bit, but still, I can imagine that buying your own groceries is a hugely cost-effective way to live.

Sounds good...
