Crime in Xalapa is very bad now. Lorenzo 5-24-10  
There is a perception that Xalapa is one very safe city which the government is trying to pass off as true. It's not!! at of this date the newspapers have not been permitted to publish almost nothing negative about Xalapa or Veracruz. Recently I have been told from very reliable sources that: 3 taxi drivers have been murdered in the Coatepc area or the road to it. A tortured body was found on the road to Coatepec (this one was in the main newspaper Diario De Xalapa. A gang of people recently invaded the Cien Asadero steak house right in front of the Teatro del Estado. Everyone was robbed. A friend's neighbor's house was invaded a few days ago and he was beaten severely and the couple's house was cleaned out of all valuables. Most kidnapping are not reported. One was a few weeks ago when a person was kidnapped right off the street by two armed gunmen. The witnesses were warned they would be killed if they reported it. A friend of mine's daughter was almost kidnapped two days ago. This WAS a safe city. It is not now!! Almost none of this is reported in the newspaper except the one noted above. I live in Coatepec and have been told these things by reliable people.

Dear Lorenzo,

The incidents you relate are not familiar to me, however, I do know that you are correct in the fact that Xalapa is no safer than anywhere else. Naturally, these occurrences are kept quiet for political reasons as the elections are on.

Thanks for the update, however depressing. But these are the true signs of the times. And they are not going to get better for awhile.

There is crime everywhere. In my trips to both Xalapa and Coatepec, I have not experienced this myself. Of course, I am not ignorant to crime, but the degree of frequency of these crimes does not seem to be at a level that makes me afraid to recommend Xalapa or Coatepec to my friends.

I'm sorry you had to experience this (or hear about these crimes), as it has obviously changed your view to the negative.

I will still recommend this as a destination for expats.
