How far to Xalapa? Stan Leopold 11-17-07  
Hello All,

Glad to find this forum. I was wondering, if I was driving down through Brownsville, how far to get to Xalapa and what are the roads like?

I always hear about "banditos" but don't know whether that is a myth or a serious concern.

Any help is appreciated.

Dear Stan,

From Brownsville the roads are good. Presently some of the sections are under construction for a 4 lane. So you will travel on 4 and 2 lane roads. Many stories are circulated about traveling in Mex. There are no banditos to worry about. As a precaution, travel duing the daytime. This is good advice because of the sometimes cattle and sheep on the roads. Common sense will see you safely to wherever you are going. The travel time is approximately 12 hours from Brownsville. If you are not in a hurry, break the trip up in two days. Travel to Tampico, (330 miles) the first day and then on to Xalapa, another 300 plus miles.

Any more questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
Have a safe trip and don't worry about the banditos. They confine themselves mostly to the Western mountain regions and attack usually at night.

By other hand..if you see military check points in the road and the soldiers stop your car,dont worry.only ask the questions they do....
