Business in Mexico - Xalapa Dale Finley 11-27-07
I would like to retire to Mexico and have been looking at the area near Xalapa. Although I don't think it will be in Xalapa itself, I may want to have a business in Xalapa.

If retired from Canada, can I still have a business in Mexico? What are the considerations and implications regarding status, income, and taxes?

Your help is appreciated...

Dear Dale,
There are many interesting and beautiful areas around Xalapa. Coatepec for instance. Just 10 minutes from Xalapa and the coffee capital of Mexico.

You can have a business in Xalapa or anywhere else in Mexico. It is better to have a Mexican national support this effort, although not entirely necessary. The taxes are undergoing a change at the moment and won't be fully understood until late in Jan. 2008. We will just have to wait and see, but it won't impede your desire to start a business.

You will have to have a work permit if you go it alone. At the very least, you will need an FM-3 which is easy to obtain. All Americans or foreigners get one.

More questions-don't hesitate to ask. I or someone else will give you more details if you need them.
Jay

Dear Dale, I'm in the same situation as yours. I don't know if you're in Xalapa already but if you are the immigration officers here are very helpful. Until you find your place of business stay on your retired "rentista" visa, very easy to get, and when you're ready present your proposal. You will have no problems especially if your business will create mexican jobs.
