Insurance question? Ann Heydt 1-6-08  
I was wondering how to get medical insurance? I don't have it now in US, but was told it is cheaper in Mexico if an expat.

Please advise...

One more question: regarding the "Social security", I can't help but think this is the poverty insurance. Am I wrong? Please explain a bit more about this option if you could.

Medical insurance is alot less in Mex. than in the U.S. There are 2 plans that are popular. One is what the Mexicans call "social security" not like ours in the States. You may find the waiting a bit difficult.
The other is also resonable and you pay according to what you earn or have. The doctors are good and the SIMS plan is for expatriates. It is always a good idea to have a doctor here in Mexico so that he can recommend for you the best way to go. There are many good doctors.

The insurance at SIMS is not a poverty level insurance even though they accept all income levels. The doctors are good and are experienced and up to date. Of course this all depends on who you get as a doctor. It is no different than in the US. If you have a personal doctor, social security in Mexico is not bad either. There is a section of the hospital where you receive more and special care. Another wing of the hosp. so to speak.
