Food expenses for one week? Yolanda 3-25-08
I was trying to estimate what my food expenses for one week will be in two different scenarios:

1) Eating out in moderately priced restaurants

2) Buying groceries and eating at home

I've seen in some of the posts that "comida corrida" is very inexpensive and, if I ate at places like this, would be very cheap to eat.

What's your take as one who lives there?

Hi yolanda.here you can eat for 2 dollars.but its more cheap if you have time to cook and buy the ingredients in the "mercados" or "tiendas micelaneas" the products are more fresh and sometimes more cheap than chedraui or other stores.

Dear Yolanda,

Some places like Papa's in Coatepec or student restaurants in Xalapa are inexpensive and provide good meals. However the least expensive is to cook at home. The markets offer inexpensive foods and Chedraui food markets have specials on Wed. So if you eat in or out, you can find inexpensive and good food. Don't eat from the streets. You will definitely contract amoebas. The average cost, depending on your tastes, is approximately $200 U.S. per month. This will depend on you.
Hope this has helped.
Jay

Thanks, Jay!

Yes, this helps. I am estimating that I will need to have about $1500/month to live a fairly similar lifestyle to that in the States.

Is this close to what you have experienced?

This is approximately what is needed, however, you can live comfortably on less. And still save some money. It's still less expensive to live here in Mex. than in the U.S.
