Why not more expats here? Justin 11-13-08
I notice that there is one particular man that answers the quesitons here. (Nice job, by-the-way, Jay). Was wondering why we don't see more?

I have visited some of the few other sites on Xalapa, and this one seems to be the most concise in its responses, and has interesting information (although not a lot).

Hope to see more from the locals in Xalapa in the future. Oh, and would also like to see some more in the Visitors Info section, like restaurants. There can't be so few restaurants in the area!

Alright, I'm done ranting... nice job on the site, and thanks to "Jay" for answering questions.

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe the site hasn't gained enough popularity yet. Hopefully this will change in the future.
And yes there are many more restaurants in the area. I am compiling a list that offers a variety in cuisine and doesn't cause "Motezuma's revenge" or worse. At least my stomach hasn't been affected.
Thanks for writing and hope there is more interest shown in the future.

The reason why you can't find many locals (as me) is because the site is in English. Although I think instead of a fault this could be a great opportunity for English learners, which in Xalapa can be counted by the hundreds! How about a small promoting add for the site in local English schools? I think it would be a great opportunity for Americans and Mexicans alike.

My name's Katie, and husband Layne and I have been researching and visiting different cities/countries of the world for years looking for that "perfect" place to live out our days (I'm 66 and he's 75). We live in a great place right now (southern California), but it's getting too darned expensive! We're retired (altho' I teach English as a Second Language a few hours a week), so our place is becoming more expensive, with inflation--I suspect medical inflation will eventually influence us to the point of moving abroad.

As to why there are not very many posters on this forum: is it because (do you suppose?) Xalapa hasn't been "discovered" yet by US Americans? That's my guess.

But I fear it may be in the PROCESS of being discovered, as I note rising real estate prices (At least on the internet. I strongly suspect that prices are a good deal lower when/if a person searches in person/by word of mouth/local bulletin boards/etc.) Does Jay or do other folks find rising prices to be the case also? And if so, is it because of the influx of foreigners?

At any rate, it seems like the ideal place for me, for many reasons, not the least of which are its pleasant climate and convenient geography for recreation and living in general...close to mountains, shopping, beach.... (Does Xalapa have a Walmart and Costco, or would one have to go to Veracruz for that?)

I also think I could keep pretty busy there, volunteering time as an ESL teacher.

I read a post on another forum the other day that indicated that there was no English language newspaper of any kind in Xalapa, but I don't know the date of the post--is this still the case? I read some Spanish, and altho' this would be an ideal way to practice and improve my language skills, still I would appreciate an occasional opportunity to read in my native language. What is the current situation there on English language publications?

I'm also trying to find out if there would be an opportunity to rent a place by a creek or river or water fall or lake, or at least with a view of some natural body of water.

Any replies, views, or comments will be appreciated.
Have a great day!
Katie
