Car Jean Duquette 8-13-09
I want to move from Canada to Coatepec late September. I will buy a car to utilize in Mexico. I have two alternatives. First, I buy the car in Canada and drive it over to Coatepec. I will pay the Quebec taxes and plates and import the car using the FM3 visa. Second, I buy the car in Xalapa and pay the annual state taxes. To take the decision, I need to get the chart with the annual tariffs up to ten years. I will buy a new Toyota Corolla or something similar. After intensive research on the Internet, I never found an answer to my query or even something approaching to an answer. I would appreciate to get an idea of these decreasing costs. An approximation would be fine. Thanks in advance. Jean.

Dear Jean,
I don't have a chart, but the cost of the first year for a new car is approx. $10,000 pesos. Also add the inspection fee each 6 months and the road tax. These costs amount to about $400pesos a year total. The $10,000 pesos for the first year reduces approx. $1,000 pesos per year until the 10th year and then disappear or there are no more costs. The rates are determined on the age of the car. Buy a used car and the cost is less per year.
It seems you already know about the import of a foreign car to Mex. If you need additional info. on this subject let me know as I legally imported my car to Mex. and don't have to return to the States every 6 months to renew the import sticker.
Hope this helps. Also you can't sell a new car or used car from another country until it is 10 years old.

Dear Jay,
Thanks very much for the information. It will help me to take my decision. I understand also that the warranty is not valid in Mexico. Another important information in the balance. Best regards. Jean.
