Speaking Spanish necessary? Fred H 11-13-07
I speak a little Spanish, not much, but found it to be necessary to know more since most locals don't speak English.

Do most Expats find it necessary to have a command of the language, or what should one expect if they were to live there day to day (obviously, I think one would WANT to learn, but want your opinion).

Dear Fred,

Although not absolutely nec., if you immerse yourself in the language, it will be developed faster and easir. The locals are more than willing to help you and you will find that many comical situations arise. A little Spanish goes a long way.

Well this is a forum for expats. Moving to another culture entails liking that culture. And language is the base of it. Why would "locals" speak english? Mexicans could very well ask you, why are you living here if you don't even speak our langauage? However they're much too polite to ever ask you that. Americans often seem surprised that not everybody speaks english in the world. I'm also an expatriate, first from France to the US. And the first thing I did was to master English. Much later I moved to Puerto Rico. I learned Spanish. I'm now moving to Mexico and really enjoy that I can communicate, watch TV, read the newspaper, understand jokes, make friends.
Again why would'nt it be necessary to speak spanish in a spanish speaking land?

My hussband and I are planning to spend a month in Xalapa in Feb 2009. Where is the best place to study Spanish? Are there programs that last 2 weeks or so?
Thanks,
Liza

I think the best place to study Spanish is at the Escuela para Estudiantes Extranjeros, of the University of Veracruz. You can find information about the school on the UV web site. The EEE offers twice-yearly intensive two-week courses (January and August). You can take the placement exam online. The intensive course costs about US$250, but it is well worth it. I've taken the course twice at different levels and found it very helpful.

Yes - you should learn Spanish to get the most out of living here. Many folks around here have learned English in school, but can't speak English. Their high school courses are primarily written work.
