Boating in and around Jalapa Larry 12-12-08  
I will be visiting Mexico with my RV (motorhome) in June. I was wondering if there were any lakes near Jalapa to water ski? Is it worth it to bring a boat? What do Mexicans tend to do for watersports?

Dear Larry,

The nearest location for water sports is about 1 to 2 hours from Xalapa on the coast. One of the best areas is Playa Esmaralda just North of the city of Vera Cruz. There are also RV sites there. Also in Boca del Rio in Vera Cruz there are areas for boating. There are no lakes large enough in close proximity to Xalapa, however. The coast is beautiful and well worth visiting.

Thanks Jay! One more thing: Is the ocean at Veracruz (I guess it really is the Gulf, huh?) very rough, or is it fairly calm?

My boat is only an eighteen footer, and it has been in saltwater, but if it is rough, then it is easier to pass on bringing it down with me. I'll just lay on the beach.

Dear Larry,

For the most part the Gulf is calm. Of course weather reports have to be watched for storms. But usually there are no big swells.

The 5 or 10 day forecast could give you an idea. But we all know how accurrate weather reports can be.
