Saw this press release:

"Jalcomulco, a village near Xalapa, the state capital of Veracruz, has expanded into the river-rafting center of Mexico. Half-a-dozen outfitters share the waters of the Pescados and Antigua rivers near Jalcomulco. Most meet international safety standards. Since it takes nearly five hours to reach the rivers from Mexico City by road, all the companies offer some type of on-site accommodations.

Travelers to the area often linger in the area after their rafting adventure. They spend a day in Coatepec, a delightful coffee-producing center, and another in Xalapa, a university town that calls itself the Athens of Mexico. Xalapa (also spelled "Jalapa") is where jalapeno chiles originated. Xalapa is home of an outstanding archeology museum."
