Mission Trip to Xalapa Chelsea 12-6-08
My church is planning to go to Xalapa, Mexico in 2009 on a mission trip, but my family is not as willing to let me go, they are concerned about my safety. Can someone give me information about the safety in Xalapa and the general nature of the city?

Please and Thank you.

Dear Chelsea,

I don't know how old you are, but coming to Xalapa with a group is certainly not dangerous. The city is well kept and clean. You can still walk the streets at 11pm and not be worried. As in every city, don't go where there may be potential problems, such as the discos and party bars. People here live a late night life especially on weekends. Everyone is surprised at how secure one feels in the city. As you are with a group, you won't have anything to worry about.

Enjoy your trip if your parents agree.

Thank you, I don't plan on going to or near any discos or party bars, because I'm going with my church's youth group. Your information was very helpful.

I agree with Jay. On my visit to Jalapa I found that people were out and about very late, and many times it was young people.

Your parents have probably been watching the news regarding the trouble had in Juarez. That is a border town, and very different from "cultured" Mexico, which is what Jalapa is.

So, whatever your parents say, listen to them, but if they do let you go know that you'll have a wonderfully cultural experience.
