Crime in Xalapa Señor Bueno 10-29-07
I saw this on the Lonely Planet site:
Crime Warning

========================================
Travel in Mexico is generally safe. However travelers are targeted by criminals in well-touristed areas such as Mexico City and the beach resorts. Most of these incidents involve petty theft but more serious crimes such as kidnappings and sexual assaults do occur. Travelers should use common sense at all times to avoid any potential risks and take extra caution at night.

Violence stemming from Mexico's drug trade does occur throughout the country, particularly in Sinaloa, the northern border states and recently in Acapulco. Travelers should avoid any obviously dangerous situations and respect any local advice regarding safety.
========================================

Has anyone experienced anything like this in Xalapa? I get the sense that it is generally a safe place, even at night.

I arrived in Xalapa this past weekend to visit friends and do some sightseeing with them and on my own. Xalapa appears to be well policed by state (Veracruz) and city police. The neighborhood where I'm staying (near Animas) gets extra TLC by the cops because the governor of Xalapa lives here. I swear to god a squad Macuiltepet car drives by at least every 15 minutes 24/7!!! Today I went to Macuiltepetl, a large nature park that encompasses the slopes and crater of an extinct volcanos. I had a little trepedation about entering the park, which is heavily vegetated, by myself. At the south base of the hill is what looks to be an abandoned quarry. It contains a soccer field and some groomed paths that wind through a garden. The soccer field was occupied by several soccer players and a small contingent of police drum and bugle corps members practicing on their instruments. Further upslope in the park I encountered another solo officer on patrol. Certainly it is important to keep one's eyes peeled, but even looking like a totally obvious female American tourist I felt safe in the park, which is frequented by strollers and joggers, and in the center of the city. Just my 2 bits worth, of course...

Re: Crime in Xalapa Vince 6-26-10
I would like to say that for the turist and foreign students is pretty safe, for the locals in business it can be very dangerous since the local mafia goes and ask for money to them and if they do refused to participate with a fee, they can be kill. Just few days ago a man that owns a DVD movie retail store were ask too give some money to this bad guys and since he refused he got drag to a local park (Police withness this event and did nothing about it) and got executed, sounds pretty bad but it seems that this applied just to the ones in business in this city. All this was told by a taxi man and basically you will not see this in the local news when the mafia is involved.

Vince, I admire your effort to write in English, but you're obviously struggling with the language. I had a hard time reading a lot of your comment. Thanks a bunch anyway!

So these days is it still safe? I am going to meet my in-laws and my family here is going crazy saying I will get taken and killed. What I have seen says it is safe, but most of what I am seeing is from past years. I know I will be with my husband and/or his family 24/7, so shouldn't I be well safe?
