Visited Xalapa, Coatepec & Xico. Love it! Zane 9-5-07
I visited the area of Xalapa, Coatepec and Xico and loved it! Of course I love the food (especially the price), but I also loved the people. What a shame most people only know Mexico by the resorts, or worse, the border towns. I found the state of Veracruz to be refreshingly cultured and friendly.

I recommend anyone to visit!

Hello. Anything you can tell me about Xapala would be great.I hope to travel there by myself and would like more information. Thanks for your help. I am intrested in the buses as well as a place to stay that is not one of the American owned places, but clean, nice and friendly. Gracias

Riding the buses in Xalapa Bodhishanti 2-14-08
There are no bus maps in Xalapa, but the bus system is excellent. I recommend that you go to Office Max, Office Depot or any store that sells maps and buy a map of the city. Most buses go downtown (a.k.a. "zona central"), but the map will help you locate the major arterials on which they run. Be prepared to speak Spanish because Xalapa is not a border town and in my experience not a lot of people on the streets or even in stores speak much--if any--English. Even if your command of the language is miniscule, people will appreciate the effort you make to communicate. The buses have names and numbers, but they come in a variety of colors and sizes, unlike American, Canadian or European cities where there is a single municipal transit agency. I found the best way to get around is to locate your destination on a map and ask the bus drivers if their bus is going to your destination. This approach was a bit hit and miss (and felt a bit chaotic compared to what I am used to--grabbin a bus map or going online to figure out bus schedules and transfers), but it worked for me.
