About Xalapa - Living in Mexico

Xalapa is the capital city of the state of Veracruz in Mexico. It lies about 63 miles Northwest of the coastal town of Veracruz, which is also the name of the state.

Its name comes from the Nahuatl roots "Xalli" (sand) and "Apan" (water place), which approximately means "spring in the sand." The spelling Xalapa (like the word México) reflects the archaic spelling. "Jalapa" (like Méjico) is modernized and is used mostly by foreigners. Most will recognize the root of this word as it used in "Jalapeño."

You will learn that Xalapa is a a very modern city, full of art, culture and fine food. It is undiscovered by most expatriates, but does have a limited population.

While this web site does not have the purpose of relating facts and figures, you will find that Xalapa is also known as the "Athens of Veracruz" because of the strong cultural influence of its three major universities, Universidad Veracruzana (the main public university in the State of Veracruz), Universidad de Xalapa and Universidad Anáhuaca de Xalapa, and also for the wide variety of cultural events in Xalapa like its theater, museums, and street art.

The most important thing to remember is that this is Mexico! The culture runs deep, and the people are uniquely "Jalapeños." You will always enjoy your visit, and we ask you leave the city and its people with the same dignity you found it with.

Enjoy our city!
